Project: In Graphic Design 2 the class was tasked with creating a set of banners for the Chapel located at our school, Merrimack College. The goal was to create six banners that represented six Augustinian Saints, those being; Saint Monica, Saint Thomas, Blessed Stephen, Saint Rita, Saint Clare, and Saint Nicholas. I was given readings of each Saint to fully understand who they are, what they did, and how they could be symbolised. The style for the banners was completely left up to myself so long as they depicted the Saints and put an emphasis on the importance of color. The project would soon be brought to the President of Merrimack College, President Hopey, where the decision to physically create the banners were completely left up to him. President Hopey agreed and gave me as well as three others in the class an opportunity to continue the project and display them in the chapel.
Process: After reading about each Saint, I immediately began writing words that stood out the most from the reading. Throughout the process of creating and beginning to develop ideas for the project one key importance jumped out; color. From here I began my research into color, the meaning behind each one, and how each color would relate to one of the Saints. During the time of research and beginning the process, stained glass came to be much of an inspiration. The utilization of certain properties of stained glass led me into beginning to look at the banners in a way that allowed me to realistically depict the Saints but also incorporate the integral point of bringing color into the chapel.
