Project: In Graphic Design 2, the project given was to create a branding identity for a company or museum. Ultimately, I decided to do a branding identity for The Met, located in New York. With this project came much time researching specific graphical elements, typography, and use of imagery in order to create a successful branding guide.
Included in the guideline book are, Background/ History, Typography, Competitors, Colors, Writing Style, Photography, Location, and Secondary Graphics. Along with cultivating these elements I also needed to create an interactive PDF that would allow viewers to select particular components and bring them back to the title pages and table of contents.
Process: Cultivating research about the company was the first step in creating the guidelines as every detail of the guide needed to have a significance while matching the Museums current brand. Luckily, The Met has done extensive work with the rebranding process and has shown what elements are used throughout the museum, in social media, as well as the website, and physical objects.
One challenge I had was with the typography as The Met has its own specific typeface made for them. In turn, I needed to do the research to find a similar typeface that matched the serif logo and body copy. After getting the basics, the next challenge was to create a grid that was dynamic enough to be used across all pages without it becoming too repetitive and static. From there I applied the elements and graphics found in my research to create the layout of the pages.
Utilizing paragraph styles and character styles made the process faster by only having to select the style to apply it to the writing. The main goal of this project was to utilize the way we can explore grids, branding guidelines, program features, and creating an Interactive PDF.
