Project: In Layout and Analysis the project was to create a photo book that told our stories of what life is like after not returning to campus due to the Pandemic. The project was viewed as a way to get ourselves out of the house and into nature, or what our life was like while staying inside. I choose to get outside and visit Maudslay State Park, located in Newburyport, MA. The goal of the project, was to allow us to be creative, but at the same time curate a group of images to tell a story about nature or about ourselves. My designed concept was to create a photobook and was printed by Blurb.
Process: The initial first part of the process was to pick a place to photograph for the photo book. Maudslay seemed like the best choice as it was right next to the Merrimack River and is a beautiful park. Before this project, I have never really used a professional camera to take photographs, but was tasked with taking at least two-hundred photos to initially pick from. After that we needed to reign it in to 100, and eventually to 50 where we would finally edit our top 20 images. During this process, we constantly needed to think about the interactions of the images next to each other and how a reader moved through it. The images we selected had to be arranged within a spread with at least 20 pages. The final step was to continue to edit the layout of the pages, working to play with space, composition, and scale.
